Hearing God

Chapter 1

God is talking to us constantly. We hear very few of these words, however, because we are spiritually deaf. An often-stated question by atheists and agnostics is, “If God does exist, why doesn’t He reveal Himself to us more clearly?” In reality, He is communicating profoundly and endlessly but we have either very little genuine interest in listening, take no time to try, or have not been instructed in how to do it.

The truth of the matter is: “…God does speak — now one way, now another — though man may not perceive it” (Job 33:14). The Scriptures, our authoritative source on matters of faith, are filled with stories of God  communicating in a myriad of ways to both believers and non-believers. Dreams, angels, impressions on one’s feelings, visions, coincidences, etc., are common place. Why are there not stories about these today? Some theologians and pastors believe that many of the Biblical epiphanies and encounters between God and humans are fabricated by the authors or used in a metaphorical way only. Many others believe they are true, but hold to a theology which claims that once the New Testament was completed, God quit speaking to His
people in any way except through the written Word. Others believe that these special communications from God to humanity ceased with the Apostles.

God is constantly speaking to us in order to communicate His love, comfort us in our affliction, guide in personal affairs, and lead us into more effective service. Even though God is communicating to us all the time we are often deaf to His voice. Hearing God is intended to make the reader more aware of the divine voice and more curious about hearing it on a regular basis.
